Through Space and Time
USC Dornsife News. July 2017. Spatial sciences enables us to see and understand our world in new ways, whether through the lens of the past, the present or the future. Spatial science is now an indisputable part of our daily lives, something we take for granted when we turn to Google Maps on our smartphones to find the nearest coffee shop, or use the GPS in our cars to navigate an unfamiliar city. The use of geospatial technology is becoming increasingly common as spatial scientists forge new contributions to our understanding of the world around us through spatial data acquisition and analysis, modeling, and mapping.

USC Students Analyze Crime with Los Angeles GeoHub
Arc News. Summer 2017. A group of students from USC recently used open data from the Los Angeles GeoHub to build an app that better explains crime in the city over the past 10 years. They created a mapping app that brought the crime data together with social and built-environment characteristics, incorporating variables such as unemployment rates, the presence or absence of street lights, and proximity to metro rail and bus stops.

Where have the trees gone? L.A. area’s green cover down dramatically in just 10 years
USC News. May 2017. Mass-produced dwellings and home expansion have reduced residential green cover as much as 55 percent, features the work of Su Jin Lee, Travis Longcore, Catherine Rich, and John Wilson. In the Los Angeles area, green cover for single-family home lots declined anywhere from 14 to 55 percent, with almost no single area spared from the decline.

USC Spatial Sciences students harness open data to analyze crime patterns in L.A.
USC Dornsife News. January 2017. Six students, postdoctoral research associate Noli Brazil and GIS project specialist Beau MacDonald from USC Dornsife’s Spatial Sciences Institute (SSI) had the opportunity to present the findings of the applied research they had undertaken for LA Mayor Eric Garcetti’s Data Team and the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). In their presentation, the SSI team shared their analysis, which underscored the importance of connecting place and space to improve public safety and demonstrated how their mapping application can uncover important patterns of crime. This street segment approach will help city leaders understand where and when crime is actually occurring, so that city resources, such as patrol units or street lighting, could be deployed more effectively.
